Welcome!

Dear Friends,

Almost twenty years ago, a former Provost of Seton Hall University announced the establishment of the Center for Public Service. Since then, we’ve had many successes. The alumni from our degree and certificate programs now number close to 1,000. We’ve brought over $5 million dollars to the University in grants, contracts and scholarships. Finally, because of our commitment to outreach, we’ve been able to offer pro bono technical assistance to many community-based organizations in our area.

About two years ago, we decided to separate the work of the Graduate Department of Public & Healthcare Administration from that of the Center for Public Service. Since that time, the Graduate Department, under the very able leadership of Dr. Jonathan Engel, has been responsible for the graduate degree and certificate programs, while the Center for Public Service remains responsible for the scholarship program and for outreach to community-based organizations, i.e., applied research and technical assistance.

Because of this separation of responsibilities, the Center, for the first time in its history, has been able to offer noncredit certificate programs for the general public. Last year, the Center, through its Nonprofit Sector Resource Institute, directed by Barkley Calkins, ran New Jersey’s only noncredit certificate program in financial management for leaders and managers of nonprofit organizations. Because of the success of this program, we are offering it again this fall.

So this is an exciting time for the Center for Public Service. We look forward to the future, hoping that we will be able to continue to service the leaders and managers of the nonprofit sector in New Jersey and elsewhere.
