Anthropology of Religion
The Anthropology of Religion course is designed to study religion through
the lens of anthropology. This means it is not a course that advocates for
one religion over another, etc. In fact, very much to the contrary. In the
course we examine the use and meaning of symbols, rituals, sacered
narratives, healing, trance, mystical edperience, the supernatural, etc.
within the context of all the world's religious tradition. As I am a
specialist in southern Italian popular Catholic devotional practices,
Haitian Voodoo, and Tibetan and Zen Buddhism, this coming fall the Anthropology of
Religion course will explore all of the above named categories (and then
some) mostly within the context of those traditions, but not solely.
Students are also required to do research within a religious tradition other
than their own or their own favorite religious tradition, including
participation/observation. This latter means you have to do more than just
read about another religous tradition. You must also visit and participate
in it as best you can and to the degree to which you are comfortable in
doing so.
