 For Teachers

Who Can Participate?
Project Acceleration instructors are considered to be Seton Hall adjunct faculty and thus should have at least a Master's Degree in the specific discipline in which they teach. Those wishing to become Project Acceleration teachers must submit proof of their credentials as well as a CV/résumé detailing their educational and employment experiences.

How Does a High School Course Become a Project Acceleration Course?
A course syllabus detailing the course objectives, textbooks, reading schedule, writing assignments, evaluation procedures, and grading policy should be submitted, along with the instructor's resume and credentials, to the Coordinator of Project Acceleration. Please consult our Syllabus Library for samples of typical Project Acceleration course syllabi. These materials should be sent to the Coordinator at least six weeks prior to the beginning of an academic semester in order to ensure that a decision can be made before registration begins. After an initial review, the Coordinator then forwards the materials to a faculty member serving as Project Acceleration liaison in the appropriate academic department at Seton Hall. Please consult our Seton Hall Faculty Roster for a list of faculty liaisons. If the course is approved, it will then be given a Seton Hall course number and title to be used for registration purposes.

Course approval is contingent upon the approved instructor teaching the course. Whenever there is a change in personnel, the Coordinator must be notified so that the new instructor's qualifications and any changes in course content can be reviewed.

In addition to excellent teaching and rigorous content, a high school course must also have a sufficient amount of instructional time in order to be a Project Acceleration course. To earn one academic credit at Seton Hall University, the minimal meeting time is 50 minutes per week during a 15-week semester. Thus, a three credit course should meet for 150 minutes per week; a four credit course for 200 minutes, some of which can include laboratory time.

Project Acceleration courses are observed regularly by either the coordinator of Project Acceleration or appropriate Seton Hall faculty members.

POLICIES & PROCEDURES

Registration
Each Project Acceleration course has its own unique registration "number," comprised of a four letter code for the subject, a four-digit number for the specific course, and a two or three letter code for the high school. Each field of information must be entered correctly on the registration form in order for the students to be registered properly. An example of how course numbers and titles would appear on the registration forms for Union High School is given below:

ENGL-1201-PUH College English I (3 credits)
MATH-1401-PUH Calculus I (4 credits)

All Math, Computer Science, and Science courses carry four credits per semester. All other courses carry three credits.

Please consult the Current Course Listing (link) to verify subject codes and course numbers for your courses. For the school letter code, please consult the list below.

* Please call 973.761.9224 if you cannot locate your high school code in the above list

  • Checks should be made payable to Seton Hall University in the correct amount. Tuition is $60 per credit, so a three credit course is $180, a four credit course is $240. (For students' information, regular Seton Hall tuition is $797 per credit.)

  • Staple the check to the green copy of the registration form (the Bursar's copy).

  • Remind students to keep the "Student" copy of the registration form in a safe place.

  • Please help us by assuring that the registration form is completed correctly, and that the amount of the check is correct. This will help to avoid delays in registration, and having to return checks to the parents.

  • Return forms and checks by the registration deadline on the bottom of the form to the Project Acceleration office:

Project Acceleration
College of Arts and Sciences
Fahy Hall, Room 118
Seton Hall University
400 South Orange Avenue
South Orange, NJ 07079

Library Access
After registration is completed, the names of all Project Acceleration teachers, students and contact persons are sent to the University Libraries. This list of names will be kept at the Circulation Desk of the library.

When Project Acceleration participants go to the library, they will need to give the librarian their name, high school and show their high school photo ID or other form of identification. Teachers and students may work at the library or check out up to six books for a period of 28 days. These books may not be renewed. Project participants may search the library's holdings prior to coming to campus through the online catalog, called "SetonCat," found on the library's homepage at http://library.shu.edu. The homepage will also have information on hours of operation. Teachers and students should get a guest parking pass from the security guard when entering the university gates.

Project Acceleration participants may also access various research databases from the library's homepage. Some of these databases are open to all users, while others require a password. Project Acceleration teachers are provided with a list of database passwords and can give them to students as needed.

Student Credit Load
Students can earn up to 22 credits over the course of their high school career, but can take no more than two courses per semester. Courses in mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, and computer science receive four credits. All other courses receive three credits.

How Do Students Get College Credit?

Academic credits earned by Project Acceleration students are held in escrow by Seton Hall University until high school diplomas are granted. After graduation, students should request that a transcript be sent to the college or university of their choice. Different schools have different policies for accepting transfer credit, but most require at minimum a grade of C. Many require a higher grade than C. Please consult our Credit Acceptance Roster for a list of schools and their specific requirements for accepting Project Acceleration credit. Although we make every effort to maintain the accuracy of our list, it is the students' responsibility to contact the admissions office of a particular university or college to verify that Project Acceleration credits will be accepted.

According to 1986 New Jersey Assembly Act No. 138, "A public institution of higher education shall accept pursuant to standards established by the chancellor, the course credit of a student who successfully participates in the program." Please note that the college or university has the right to determine how Project Acceleration course credits will be transferred to a student's degree program. Options include counting the credits toward degree requirements or as general electives. This Act, however, does not require an institution to accept Project Acceleration course credits for the substitution of courses required for a specific degree program. For example, a Project Acceleration mathematics course may or may not be accepted by an institution as fulfilling their requirements in mathematics, depending on their transfer policies.

How Do Students Request A Transcript?

Students should ask their teacher or guidance counselor for a Seton Hall Transcript Request Form. The Project Acceleration office can also mail the form to students if necessary. Fill out the form completely - make sure to give social security number and date of birth. In the area under "Special Program," write "Project Acceleration" and give dates of participation.

Transcript Request Forms are also available in PDF format. Click Here

Forms should be mailed directly to:

Transcript Office
Enrollment Services
Seton Hall University
400 South Orange Avenue
South Orange, NJ 07079

The first five transcripts are free of charge. After that, the charge is $3 per request.

Withdrawal
Students may withdraw from the course and receive a refund on their tuition only if they notify both the high school teacher and the Coordinator of Project Acceleration in writing by the withdrawal deadline. Please consult Deadlines and Events (link) for the precise date.
