There are many job opportunities for speakers of Russian and East European Languages. Most are in business, law, education, international development, foreign service, technical fields, such as engineering and urban planning, and non-profit administration. But language expertise is valued in any field, as is a knowledge of area studies. Finding a job in Russia or Eastern Europe requires the same kind of strategies you'd use in any job search. For example, you might want to gain experience first by doing an internship with a government agency, an international non-profit organization, or with a U.S. company that has a branch abroad. You'll want to do research into corporate hiring practices, and emphasize in your resume skills that catch the eye of an overseas employer. The best way to begin is to consult print resources at Walsh Library that focus on international jobs and careers and provide advice on how to write a resume or conduct a job interview. Below is a practical guide to resources that will help you get going on your job search.
The U.S. State Department and related agencies finance large-scale technical projects in Russia, the NIS and Eastern Europe. Many of these are awarded to contractors in the private sector. The Government also uses non-profit organizations to administer and monitor their projects, and to comply with grant requirements. Most of these projects, obviously, are based out of D.C. Some sources to go to for job postings are:
United States Agency For International Development (USAID)
United States Office of Personnel Management (USAJOBS)
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)
Center for Civil Society International (CCSI)
Center for Citizens Intiatives (CIC)
Institute for International Mediation
and Conflict Resolution

It provides links to businesses, embassies, and online employment agencies which deal exclusively with Russia, the NIS, and Central and Eastern Europe.
